BURLEY AREA GUIDE FOR STUDENTS

IDEALLY LOCATED AS JUST A FEW MINUTES FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF LEEDS CITY CENTRE

About Burley

An inner-city suburb, Burley is less than a mile away from the centre of Leeds and, as such is a very convenient place to live. With an array of cafes, bars and shops around every corner, it’s also well-connected by train and bus, so getting to and from campus isn’t going to be an issue.

Things to do in Burley

Left Bank Leeds

This former church is now an arts and entertainment venue which holds lots of offbeat events. Magazine fairs, real ale festivals, live gigs and even art exhibitions are held regularly, while admission to many events is cheap or even free of charge!

Cardigan Fields

An entertainment complex handily placed on Kirkstall Road, Cardigan Fields has it all: a gym, several pubs and restaurants, a couple of supermarkets and even a Vue cinema. On a typical night out there, you could grab a burger, watch the latest blockbuster and work off what you ate before heading home!

Leeds Industrial Museum

Based in the historic Armley Mills, this museum pays homage to Leeds’ industrial past. It’s cheap to enter and, if you’re studying history at university, is a handy place to go to check out what life was like before, during and after the Industrial Revolution.

Universities

University of Leeds

Address: University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT

The main campus is less than a mile east of Burley and, as such, is really easy to get to by foot, bus or bike. There are plenty of shops and bars on-site in the Student Union building, while there’s plenty of space in the libraries to go and write essays and revise for exams in peace.

Working in Burley

Burley does have a number of shops and bars looking for part-time staff. The best places to look are in Cardigan Fields, along Woodsley Road and Burley Road, from the Park Lane end up towards Kirkstall in the west.

Getting around Burley

Bus

Burley is served by a number of regular bus routes. Along Burley Road, the 19/19A, 49 and 50 routes take you to East Leeds and Horsforth, Tinshill and Bramley, as well as to the City Centre. Along Kirkstall Road, the main routes are the 33/33A, 508 and 670. From both roads, it takes less than 10 minutes to get to the centre of Leeds.

Train

Burley Park station serves Burley, Hyde Park and parts of Headingley. Trains go to Leeds eastbound and, westbound, to Horsforth, Harrogate and Knaresborough. If you’re studying at the Headingley campuses of Leeds and Leeds Beckett, or at Leeds Trinity in Horsforth, boarding at Burley Park helps to save time.
