Where is North Leeds?

North Leeds is four miles north of Leeds City Centre. Horsforth and Adel are to the west, while Shadwell is to the east; Moortown is to the south. York is 23 miles north-east, Bradford is 10 miles south-west and Manchester is 38 miles south-west.

Restaurants and cafes in North Leeds

For traditional pub grub, The Lord Darcy pub on Harrogate Road is worth reserving a table at. They serve great pints, family meals and show live sport on weekends. Further down the road, Amici is a popular little Italian restaurant which serves cocktails alongside antipasti, salads and pasta dishes.

On The Avenue in Alwoodley, there’s The Olive Branch, a relaxed restaurant that serves cuisine from across the Mediterranean. Also here, you’ll find a branch of Cooplands that does coffee and pastries to go.

North Leeds has a few large-scale employers in some diverse industries. These include tourism, education, sports and leisure, financial services and technology, with retail jobs prevalent in the Moor Allerton area.

The NHS are a big employer in North Leeds, running a number of health centres. Leeds City Council, meanwhile, run all the local schools plus nearby Harewood House, a major tourist attraction. In retail, Sainsbury’s and Homebase are two of the biggest employers, running large shops in the Moor Allerton District Centre.

Amenities in North Leeds

Moor Allerton has quite a few shops, with two supermarkets - Sainsbury’s and Netto - located in the district centre. Alwoodley, meanwhile, has a Tesco Express, Alwoodley Wines and a pharmacy. On Harrogate Road, there is Headrow Gallery, an art shop that also puts on exhibitions. The nearest banks are in Moortown, while there’s a post office in Cranmer Bank.

The health centres serving North Leeds are The Avenue Surgery and Moorcroft Surgery; both are run by the NHS. Weetwood Police Station is the nearest one, located just north of Far Headingley.

Professional housing in North Leeds

North Leeds has an abundance of properties worth looking at, ranging from sprawling new-build and period detached properties in Alwoodley to modern semi-detached ex-council houses in Moor Allerton. There are also a few high-rise flats near Harrogate Road en route to Harewood and Harrogate.

Transport in North Leeds

Buses go through the A61 towards Harrogate in one direction and Leeds City Centre in the other; the 36 goes along this route every half hour at least. The 7A, which runs every 20 minutes at peak times on Monday-Saturday, terminates in The Avenue, Alwoodley. The 7X ends at Alwoodley Gates on Harrogate Road.

By train, North Leeds is around a couple of miles east of Horsforth station and four miles north of Leeds station; the latter has by far the greater number of services. Parking is available at the King Lane Park and Ride and a handful of spaces near the shops on The Avenue.

Shadwell

A village turned suburb, Shadwell retains its rural charms with added convenience from being in a big city. Large semis with sizeable gardens look out onto the countryside, while there are a few local employers with offices located nearby.

Moortown

This upmarket Leeds suburb has it all - great properties large and small, excellent transport links, a slate of major and minor local employers and sufficient local amenities. If you’re working in healthcare or education, Moortown is the place to be.

Horsforth

Every inch a market town, Horsforth is closely connected to the rest of the Leeds area by road and rail, making it a nice, quiet place to live if you’re a professional. There are a handful of local employers too if you fancy a shorter commute to work.
