An inner-city suburb, Burley is less than a mile away from the centre of Leeds and, as such is a very convenient place to live. With an array of cafes, bars and shops around every corner, it’s also well-connected by train and bus, so getting to and from campus isn’t going to be an issue.
This former church is now an arts and entertainment venue which holds lots of offbeat events. Magazine fairs, real ale festivals, live gigs and even art exhibitions are held regularly, while admission to many events is cheap or even free of charge!
An entertainment complex handily placed on Kirkstall Road, Cardigan Fields has it all: a gym, several pubs and restaurants, a couple of supermarkets and even a Vue cinema. On a typical night out there, you could grab a burger, watch the latest blockbuster and work off what you ate before heading home!
Based in the historic Armley Mills, this museum pays homage to Leeds’ industrial past. It’s cheap to enter and, if you’re studying history at university, is a handy place to go to check out what life was like before, during and after the Industrial Revolution.

The main campus is less than a mile east of Burley and, as such, is really easy to get to by foot, bus or bike. There are plenty of shops and bars on-site in the Student Union building, while there’s plenty of space in the libraries to go and write essays and revise for exams in peace.
Burley does have a number of shops and bars looking for part-time staff. The best places to look are in Cardigan Fields, along Woodsley Road and Burley Road, from the Park Lane end up towards Kirkstall in the west.
Burley is served by a number of regular bus routes. Along Burley Road, the 19/19A, 49 and 50 routes take you to East Leeds and Horsforth, Tinshill and Bramley, as well as to the City Centre. Along Kirkstall Road, the main routes are the 33/33A, 508 and 670. From both roads, it takes less than 10 minutes to get to the centre of Leeds.
Burley Park station serves Burley, Hyde Park and parts of Headingley. Trains go to Leeds eastbound and, westbound, to Horsforth, Harrogate and Knaresborough. If you’re studying at the Headingley campuses of Leeds and Leeds Beckett, or at Leeds Trinity in Horsforth, boarding at Burley Park helps to save time.

This gym is handily placed in Cardigan Fields, where you can shop and unwind after an intense workout. There’s a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool and physiotherapy to take advantage of, while there are regular spa days if you’re in need of a pampering. The gym floor, meanwhile, has all the machines needed to help you keep those fresher pounds at bay.

This dance centre is open to students as well as locals, offering a more unique way to exercise in between lectures. It’s handily located in the centre of Burley, with lessons for adults held throughout the week.

Burley has a wide selection of cafes, bars and down-to-earth pubs to wind down in after a long day on campus. For a drink, the Brudenell Social Club in neighbouring Hyde Park is one of the cheapest places for a pint in Leeds. If you want something more sedate, Burley Road is home to a number of cozy cafes.

This popular student haunt has plenty going for it - it’s cheap, does deliveries and a range of cuisines to boot. You can order vegetarian and vegan food, pizza and, best of all, Indian. The Grove Cafe happens to be quite close to lots of different bars, so if you need something to eat before heading home, it’s handily placed.

A fixture in Burley for nearly 40 years, The Corner Cafe is a homely Indian restaurant which serves more than just the basics. Their dessert menu has as many as 25 different flavours of kulfi, all of which are homemade and can be taken home with you!
While Burley doesn’t have one massive park, it has a few smaller green spaces for you to get away from the hubbub of the university campus. Near Burley Road and The Village Street, there’s a small, tree-lined park that’s almost completely empty. Just behind Kirkstall Road, there are a couple of green spaces where you can watch the world go by.

Burley is one of the quieter parts of Leeds, despite being so close to the city centre. Despite that, there’s still plenty to do and, being so peaceful, it’s also a safe place to live in throughout your studies.
Ideally situated between the main campuses of Leeds and Leeds Beckett Universities, Hyde Park is a major cultural and entertainment hub, full to the brim with quirky shops, bars and restaurants.
This part of LS6 is the place to be for sports fans! Home to Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire County Cricket Club, it also has two university campuses and a lot of places to shop and dine at without breaking the bank.
On the edge of Leeds City Centre, Woodhouse blends in seamlessly with Burley and Hyde Park and is right at the heart of the student district. Its park, shops and bars make it a good, local place to relax after a day’s study.
