Where is Leeds City Centre?

As you might expect, Leeds City Centre lies slap bang in the middle of Leeds. It’s around 36 miles north of Sheffield, 28 miles south-west of York, 11 miles east of Bradford and 43 miles north-east of Manchester. Most major suburbs are within five miles of the city centre.

Restaurants and cafes in Leeds City Centre

Leeds City Centre is full to the brim with restaurants serving local, regional and global cuisines. Many of them are concentrated on streets such as Park Row, The Headrow, Briggate and in Trinity Leeds. However, there are a few that lie off the beaten track, particularly around Great George Street, which offer peace and quiet with your pint.

Old-style pubs worth visiting for a long lunch or evening session include Whitelocks, The Palace, Mr Foley’s Cask Ale House and the Town Hall Tavern. As for upscale dining, restaurants in the city centre which have proven popular with local professionals include The New Conservatory on Albion Place and the White Cloth Gallery on Aire Street.

Best industries in Leeds City Centre

Leeds City Centre is a major hub for technology and creative firms. Agencies specialising in design, development and digital marketing are dotted around the place, particularly around Wellington Street, near the canals. Around Park Row, many banks and building societies are hiring and have a major presence.

In and around the Park Square area, there are numerous law firms with practices there. It is often said that outside of London, Leeds is the best place to find a job with a law firm. Other industries with a big presence in Leeds City Centre are retail, education, health and food.

Companies that have their headquarters in the city centre include Yorkshire Bank, Leeds Building Society, Asda Walmart, First Direct and Jet2. Other companies with large offices in the area are Capita, Sky Betting and Gaming and William Hill.

Amenities in Leeds City Centre

There are two hospitals in Leeds City Centre - Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James’s Hospital. The LGI is closest to most of the housing, as it’s inside of the inner ring road. For any police enquiries, there is a police station just off Westgate, next to the two courts.

Major shopping streets in Leeds include The Headrow, Briggate, Commercial Street, Boar Lane, Vicar Lane and Kirkgate. Trinity Leeds is the largest indoor shopping centre, with Victoria Quarter, the Merrion Centre, The Core, St John’s Centre and Kirkgate Market other shopping venues of note.

Leeds also has more than 30 bank branches in its city centre, with many concentrated around Park Row. On top of that, there are two post offices - one near the markets and the other in the St John’s Centre.

Transport in Leeds City Centre

There are many ways to get about in and around Leeds City Centre, but the best way is via bus. Either from the bus station or major interchanges on Infirmary Street and Vicar Lane, you can catch buses to most parts of Leeds and beyond, while the CityBus takes you around the city centre for 50p (or free with an MCard).

As for the train, Leeds station is two and a half hours’ ride away from London King’s Cross. York is just over half an hour away, while it takes just under an hour to get to Manchester Victoria or Sheffield. Bradford Interchange is 20 minutes away.

When it comes to car parking, there are quite a few multi-storeys around the city centre, with the largest being near the markets, Merrion Centre, Trinity Leeds and on Albion Street.

Popular areas near Leeds City Centre

Headingley

One of the busiest places in Leeds outside of the city centre, Headingley is abuzz with great bars, traditional pubs and independent shops. It also happens to have a great mix of places to live, from Victorian townhouses and terraces to spacious semis in quiet cul-de-sacs.

Moortown

Moortown is just the place to be for culture vultures. A few minutes away from the famous Roundhay Park. Moortown is ideal for professional seeking a quite location right next to the city centre and has plenty of advantages such as clothes shops and rustic cafes all nestle side by side. The nearby parks and green spaces are great places for a Sunday stroll, while there are many great places to live here too.

Chapel Allerton

Just outside the city centre with great comuting services taht reach Leeds city centre in 10 minutes, Chapel Allerton boasts great restaurants, bars and is an ideal place to go shopping or enjoy a quiet pint. The terraces and townhouses in the area are well worth a second look.
