The annual Yorkshire Asian business awards (YABA) gala dinner took place in Bradford on September 24th in which Parklane Properties director Nazir Ahmed was amongst the winners on the day. Nazir Ahmed set up the company in 1977 when he purchased his first student property. He was the first generation of Asians in his family to migrate to Yorkshire not speaking any English, not understanding the culture or the economy but were focused on one thing- to better their family. Originally based at Cardigan Road, the company moved to its current head office at Otley Road in Headingley in the late 1980s.
Their success in the student rentals sector naturally led to professional rentals and sales. Using a wealth of local knowledge and property experience, they quickly established Parklane as the number one estate agent in Leeds City Centre and the popular North Leeds areas. Parklane properties has not only created business for the economy in Yorkshire, but created jobs for local people and regenerated derelict sites to build more business in Leeds.
Other Asian business owners came together to thank the region of Yorkshire for giving migrants the opportunity and motivation to succeed in business.
Some other finalists at YABA included Amjad Pervez- the founding partner of the Seafresh Group. He reminded attendees to “think of the global village because we have an interconnected world” meaning to not forget your once underprivileged roots and to always remember to help people less fortunate than you.
Andleeb Hanif, co-founder of the Asian Express Newspaper and Sir Gary Verity, the tourism Chief were also winners at the award ceremony. The judging panel included Tory peer baroness Sayeeda Warsi, internet pioneer Ajaz Ahmed and regional IoD director Natalie Sykes.
Mr Rajeev Dewedi of Rajeev accounts was one of many to give the vote of thanks. He said: “While we are proud and pleased to see Yorkshire Asians flourishing in their various endeavours, we also would like to pay tribute to the UK and the splendid country of Yorkshire for giving our businessmen and women the opportunity, the motivation and above all the success they have all achieved until today and all that they will achieve in generations to come.”
Parklane are extremely proud and privileged to have won an award at YABA and that the hard work of Nazir Ahmed and everyone involved has been acknowledged at such a prestigious event. The success of the company has taken much dedication and perseverance and proof that hard work and commitment pays off.
