Restaurants and cafes near Gledhow

On the border between Gledhow and Chapel Allerton, El Bareto is a friendly tapas bar which serves authentic dishes from all over Spain; it lies on Gledhow Valley Road. Elsewhere, you’ll find a handful of takeaways; the pick of the bunch is Rumour, which attracts good reviews from some of the locals.

As for bars, The New Highwood is the local pub of choice, putting on live entertainment nigh on every week. A little further away, you’ll find the more relaxed atmosphere in The Roundhay Fox a welcome change of pace, particularly if you just want to sit down, pint in hand with a paper in front of you.

By far the biggest industry in Gledhow is private healthcare. Other industries of note in the area include education and retail, with both hospitality and tourism from nearby Roundhay Park providing some local jobs as well.

The biggest employer in the area is Spire Healthcare, who run the Spire Leeds Hospital. MHA, another private healthcare firm, run the Gledhow Care Home. Leeds City Council are another major employer in Gledhow; they’re in charge of two primary schools and Roundhay School for pupils aged 11 to 18.

Gledhow has a handful of shops spread across three parades. There are a couple of convenience stores and a newsagents, with two branches of Londis available for life’s essentials. One Londis has Gledhow’s post office, while for more gourmet treats, Lidgett Lane Larder is worth a look if you’re hosting a dinner party or something similar.

The local surgery is Chandos Medical Centre, which is just north of the row of shops on Lidgett Lane. Stainbeck Police Station is the nearest one to Gledhow, being around 1.25 miles west.

Gledhow has a few high-rise flats that come with views of the surrounding valleys and parklands, but most properties here are mid-20th century semi-detached houses. Most houses here come with front and back gardens and are in one of Leeds’ safest areas to live.

Transport in Gledhow

Gledhow is well catered for by buses. The 3A and 13A pass through some of the major routes here; the former stops near the top of Lidgett Lane while the latter goes all the way down to the end - both stop in Leeds City Centre via Chapeltown. The 38, an hourly service, terminates in Gledhow itself.

For trains, Leeds Station is the nearest stop, being more than two miles south-west of Gledhow; all bus services stop within a short walking distance. Parking is by and large restricted to the streets.
